| Subject: Beginners guide to Ripping TV Episodes from DVD Fri Oct 24, 2008 1:43 am | |
| Tutorial:: Beginners guide to Ripping TV Episodes from a DVDOk, From what i have read over the last few weeks, it has come to my attention that not many people have posted clear or succinct instructions on how to rip episodes from a DVD. I have come to the conclusion that this is due to the vast differences in the structure of DVDs from manufacturers, i.e. Some manufacturers will split episodes on a DVD in chapters while other may string all the episodes in one PGC (Program Chain) leaving you to split the episodes up manually using VirtualDub or an alternative, Basically, you just need to be lucky with the DVD you are going to rip. This tutorial is more of an explanation than a Spoon-feed of how to rip TV shows from a DVD, to give you the ideas of how TV show DVDs are structured. I don't claim to have all the answers nor am i a tech god. This method works for me on most discs. It worked well on the disc i will be using for this tutorial which is the TV show "24" Season 1. Luckily the chapters were split nicely into 7 PGCs within VTS_01 (Video Title Set) Lets Begin. Applications:: In this tutorial i will be using DVD Decrypter and AutoGK (Gordian Knot) - Code:
-
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD_Decrypter
http://www.autogk.me.uk/ There are many alternatives for DVD Decrypter if u prefer but for this tutorial i will be adjusting the settings in DVD Decrypter to break up the episodes correctly.
Step 1::
Open DVD Decrypter, Select IFO Mode under 'Mode' Menu.
Click 'Tools' > 'Settings' and select the 'IFO Mode' Tab.
Here we have 4 Boxes which we will alter::
'On Startup'
'Select Main Movie PGC' :: This box when checked will highlight the longest PGC by default, have it on or off, its your call
'Enable Stream Processing' :: This box when checked will allow you to rip audio or video streams from a DVD independently from one another, Disable this as we are merging both streams into the one AVI file
'Uncheck Suspect Cells' Check this box as we want it to deselect the cells which appear to be void
'Options'
Set the Drop down box 'File Splitting' to None. This will keep the parameters of the episodes intact. i.e. the start and the end of each episode will be correct rather than the avi file ending part way through an episode.
(This is where we see the complications of TV show DVDs, if the episodes are all strung into the one PGC DVD Decrypter will extract them all as one 2 hour or so VOB file. This is where you pray to the gods of Xvid for favor and fortune or use another method. However if they are all in the same PGC they may be divided by chapters. Here you will have to judge how many chapters make up and episode, either look in the guide or the back cover of your DVD or use a standard DVD or media player to find out)
'Create Additional Files'
Uncheck all the options in this section, We wont be adding any info files as all we are interested in is the video itself.
'File Names'
All we are interested in here is the 'PGC Number', this will help us in further steps you can uncheck the 'Angle Number' box
After checking the boxes, click OK and double check you are still in IFO mode.
Step 2::
Before we start ripping with DVD Decrypter, take the time to create some destination folders for each episode you want to rip from the disc. This is important. If you rip all the episodes from the disc into the same directory, and proceed to encode with AutoGK, you will find 4 or so of the same episode. This is because AutoGK creates a temp folder in the directory of its current source file (named 'agk_tmp') This folder contains temporary info of the size, res etc of the file it is converting. So just create 4 or so folders called 'S01E01' for example
Step 3::
Now you can select the destination of your first episode. Clink the 'Input' tab::
Select the first episode, this will usually be the first PGC entry that looks like it would be the correct length for an episode (Usually about 21-25 minutes for a standard TV Episode. In this case 49 minutes for an episode of 24) The episodes will more than likely be under the same VTS. As previously mentioned, you may find that your episodes are in a single string contained in one PGC, in this case try and separate the episode through the chapters, if not you will need to split it up manually through an editing program.
Click Encrypt.
Repeat the process for each episode on the disc placing each decrypted file in their respective folders.
Step 4::
Open AutoGK.
Click the browse icon to the right of the Input file bar, browse to the folder where your episode has been Decrypted to, Select the .IFO file.
Click the browse icon to the right of the Output file bar and browse to the same folder and click Save.
Next, in the 'Select output size' box, select 'Custom Size and enter an appropriate file size for the length of episode. (About 175-220MB for a 22-25 minute episode) in my case i opted for around 440MB for an hour episode, this will be reduced marginally by winrar. By selecting 'Custom Size', you are instructing AutoGK to run two passes of the VOB, once from your HDD and one from the disc so leave the DVD in your drive.
Now you can click 'Add Job' to queue the first episode, from here you can multiple job to convert the rest of the episodes on the disc. Just remember to save the episodes into their respective folders to avoid conflict errors.
Click Start.
AutoGk will run a series of small applications and can take some time depending on your system and size of episode, this however does not take up large amounts of system resources so you can continue to perform other tasks on your pc. Once it is finished you can delete the temp folder and the VOB file.
And that is that
As i mentioned this is not a universal guide to every TV DVD disc but the idea and method is there. Conversely you can use SmartRipper instead of DVD Decrypter, some people prefer this program as it can be easier for some discs as it simplifies the chapter selection process. Your call.
Thanks for reading i hope it helps and encourages more of you to upload TV Shows to the glory that is Warez-BB
